Developing a 5G modem isn't easy.At the moment, only a handful of companies are capable of designing 5G modems, and even large companies like Intel are having trouble engineering them.Layers of patented innovation, coupled with conceptual and physical barriers to development, make it cheaper to use someone else's parts than to try to make your own.

Apple recently ended a two-year patent battle with 5G chipmaker qualcomm.Although apple will continue to use qualcomm's chips in the future, it is developing its own 5G chips and plans to release them by 2025.
